Spark Box Studio Picton, Ontario, Canada. Aug. 1-13, 2016 July 27: I leave for Canada having just completed three distinct exhibitions in Asheville, NC. I'm feeling ready to sow some seeds, experiment, and see what transpires. I stay in Toronto for five nights - fabulous city. With travel restricting my material supply and knowing that I won't have access to an art store during the residency, I must thoughtfully plan my materials list. At a store called DeSerres on Spadina Ave in Toronto I purchase: • Set of 10 Golden Fluid Acrylics • 1 tube Titanium White • Small bottle of DeSerres pouring medium • 1 long-stem bright • 1 small glue stick, • 1 hot pink marker • 36" x 60" un-stretched primed canvas Materials packed in my suitcase from Asheville: assorted decorative papers, 30 sheets 8 x10 paper, 25 sheets 11” x 14” digital print cardstock, 1 almost-empty tube of sap green, small half-empty bottle of high-flow Nickel Azo ...

PENLAND PICS

This isn't the typical scenario one conjures up when thinking about Penland School of Crafts, but I couldn't resist uploading this photo. I think it's beautiful. Construction is under way for a new drawing and painting facility on campus. Does this mean we'll be seeing more drawing and painting classes offered at Penland in the future? I hope so! From July 20 - August 5 I attended a class called "Experimental Drawing and Printmaking" which combined non-conventional drawing approaches with intaglio and monoprinting. For one exercise, drawing instructor, Evie Woltil Richner , had us make our own unique drawing tools and use them to create marks on paper in graphite and ink. The results were spectacular, but I was also interested in rendering the objects themselves. Another experiment had us drawing, literally, alongside another person with our wrists bound together. I found myself, I made myself, and I said what I had to say.” ― Suzanne Valadon Suzanne Valadon (1865 –1938) was born Marie-Clementine Valadon. She was given the name "Suzanne" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec after the biblical story, Susanna and the Elders . As a young woman Valadon modeled for de Toulouse-Lautrec and other artists such as de Chavannes and Renoir. Valadon began a serious pursuit of drawing and painting in 1896 and continued to paint for over forty years. She did not attend a formal art academy but learned from the artists who painted her. She often reinvented classical themes in European art and her work attracted attention because she depicted unidealized nudes. Valadon was an accomplished painter of her time and was well-respected and admired. She was admitted to professional associations and juried exhibitions during her lifetime.
